Hyperdimension Neptunia: Producing Perfection Review

Hyperdimension Neptunia: Producing Perfection (PP) is the first Vita title in the Hyperdimension Neptunia series. Unlike the previous titles though, this one isn’t a RPG – it’s an Idol Producer Simulator game.

Yes, Idol Producer Simulator. You take the role of a producer who is (somewhat forcefully) put in charge of training one of the 4 CPUs to become an idol. The group MOB48 has taken Gameindustri by storm and as such has started to take over all the shares. This has weakened the powers of the CPUs and they have decided it’s time to do something about it.

The game takes place on a day-by-day schedule. You’ll spend your days training your chosen CPU, getting them publicity, relaxing, and then occasionally putting on a concert. Depending on what you do you will raise a variety of stats for them which will help make them more popular. At the end of each week and month you will receive an update on where your song ranks in the charts. The only way to really raise your song rank is to well… perform it. Concerts can only be done every so often though, so you’ll have some weeks where you can’t do anything at all for it.

Hyperdimension Neptunia: PP is a fair bit of micromanaging. You need to keep your CPU from getting stressed but at the same time you need to maintain doing all the other actions. You can also choose to spend time getting to know either 2014-10-04-234548just your CPU or the other ones. Additionally, you can travel to the other worlds which will help increase your shares. Once you get to know other CPUs well enough you can try and form a duo (or even a trio) with them, though this will adjust how your shares are handled.

It is actually disappointingly easy to accidentally beat the game. The main way to “beat” the game is to take the majority of the shares. Once you do so, you will put on one final concert and then cue credits. There are three endings to get for each CPU – Bad, Good, and True. The good ending is fairly easy to get by just taking the majority of the shares as previously mentioned, you get the bad ending by overstressing your CPU, and the true ending actually requires work to choose the right options.

One place the game seriously falters is the song selection. Perhaps they were too busy making sure that your CPU’s breasts jiggled just right, but there are only 5 total songs available in the game. You’ll get sick of them very, very fast.

There is definitely a lot of emphasis in this game towards a male audience (or those otherwise interested in that sort of stuff). I guess it’s to be expected with the territory though. You can play dress up with your CPU as well, choosing how they’ll look in performances or just in the viewer. You can do the same for their HDD mode – however, HDD mode is only available if you are performing a solo and on “their” song.

If you are a completionist there is a fair amount of things to actually collect. A large variety of different scenes for each2014-10-05-010742 character along with different stages, stage effects, outfits, and accessories.

Hyperdimension Neptunia: Producing Perfection feels like it’s missing something though. Maybe it’s just the fact there is only 5 songs, but it definitely feels like they could’ve done better. However, the amount of fanservice (especially for those who might be interested in certain things with female anime characters) and various scenes at least give it some replayability. You may feel a bit disappointed when you first beat it but will likely find yourself wanting to jump back in to see more scenes. For those who are fans of idol simulators or the Hyperdimension Neptunia series this title is one you should look into. Just be prepared for the lack of songs!

Hyperdimension Neptunia: Producing Perfection Review Score

3.5/5

It needed more song options. Yes there’s some major fanservice with the four CPU girls but it’s to be expected in this genre.

Hyperdimension Neptunia: Producing Perfection is available now for purchase on PSN, Amazon, and Gamestop.
